Poliomyelitis in Nigeria and West Africa

From 2003 to 2007, type 1 polio originating in northern Nigeria spread to cause outbreaks in 20 previously polio-free countries,including across west Africa, the Horn of Africa, and as far away as Indonesia and Yemen (source: WHO).

 Yellow fever in Côte d’Ivoire

The Ministry of Health of Côte d’Ivoire has declared a yellow fever outbreak in Abidjan. The outbreak was laboratory confirmed at the beginning of May 2008 (source: WHO).

The Government of the Netherlands has notified a case of Marburg haemorrhagic fever (MHF) in a Dutch tourist who visited Uganda (source: WHO).

As of 1 February, the Ministry of Health, Brazil has reported a total of 48 cases of yellow fever including 13 deaths (Source: WHO).

Human cases of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) continue to increase, with 228 cases and 84 deaths reported as of 7 November. (source: WHO)

The Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is continuing to respond to the on-going outbreak of Ebola haemorrhagic fever in the Province of Kasai Occidental with the support of a wide range of international partners - (Source: WHO).
