Role and contribution
The protein crystallography group at the Instituto de Biología Molecular de Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC) has about 25 members. The group has moved recently (Oct 2003) to new laboratory premises at the Barcelona Science Park which has state-of-the-art facilities for molecular biology and biomedical research and, particularly, for structural biology research, including units for large-scale production of proteins, both NMR, EM and X-ray platforms and excellent computing facilities. The group has a strong expertise in the determination of macromolecular structures using X-ray diffraction techniques. The current research activities of the group are mainly focused in the structural characterization of nucleic acid-interacting proteins and complexes, including proteins involved in replication and transcription.
The people involved in the VIZIER project are : M. Coll who is a Principal Investigator, a Professor at the CSIC and Vice-director of the IBMB. He has about 100 articles published in peer-reviewed journals in the field of structural biology ; M. Solà is a Senior Scientist (Ramon y Cajal) in charge of structure determination ; L. Bellsolell is a Staff Scientist (Parc Científic de Barcelona) in charge of the X-ray diffraction platform ; A. Guasch is a Staff Scientist (CSIC) in charge of protein purification and crystallization activities ; A. Canals is a postdoc in charge of computing and computing graphics activities.
